“The Lord thundered from heaven; the Most High made his voice heard. He shot his arrows and scattered them; he hurled lightning bolts and routed them. The depths of the sea became visible, the foundations of the world were exposed, at your rebuke, Lord, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils” (Psalm 18:13-15).
I read this passage and it struck me, strongly, that we need a vision of an Almighty, Sovereign God. Here is a prayer I wrote as a result of reading this passage.
“Oh God, thunder from heaven! Make Yourself known! Break our pride and scatter it to the wind! Expose our sinful hearts! We are so deceived! We know much less than we think we do. Oh Lord, if only we SEE You will all be made well. If only we HEAR Your voice will all be made clear. We live in a fog until You blow it away and speak to us. We have a lost a vision of what it means to worship You, the Almighty, Sovereign God. We speculate and we stick out our chests and act like we know it all UNTIL You show up! Our only response, at that moment, is not to bicker, not to complain, not to fight, but to bow down and worship the Living God! Destroy our pride, Oh God! Bring us to the dust! All our learning and all of our planning comes to NOTHING when we but hear Your voice! We are desperate for Your presence and we are desperate for Your power and glory to be made known to sinful people, like ourselves. We are nothing without You and we can do nothing without You. We are confused; we are lost; we are wandering aimlessly. We have forgotten You. Thunder from heaven, Oh God, that we may marvel, praise, and worship.”
